marriage and parenting COURSE

We want Westside to be full of healthy families who are beacons of what God designed families to be. But building these sorts of marriages is hard! It is counter-cultural, just plain hard work, and complicated by the fact that we are all imperfect people who are still learning how to follow Jesus. So, we are going to unpack a range of issues that are mission critical to the success of our marriages and parenting. We will be providing some biblical input each week, some exercises to do at home, and will get together periodically to process things and ask questions around a meal.

We’d love to see you get involved and come along to the meals, catch all the content, and work through things together in your home. It’s never too late to register, and you can catch up on anything you have missed below. If you can’t make it out to things, you are still welcome to follow along and learn more about marriage and parenting with us.

We have quite a bit of space for Q&A in the course, but we know how easy it is to forget questions between workshops. So, you can text in questions any time during the course to 503-908-4256 and we’ll try to address them when we can.

Week 1 - February 20th

Launch week! This week we had pizza, got to know each other a bit, and spent some time looking at God’s heart for marriages and parents. The good news - God wants to be really involved. We also had a panel for our first round of Q&A. You can catch up on the teaching and Q&A below. This week we’re not setting any work to do at home.

Week 2 - February 27th

This week we wanted to get some big picture input from some people who have a big heart for what God wants to do in families - Phil and Diane Comer. They planted Westside years ago, and are Phil is the one elder who is affectionately known as ‘pops’. They’ve got a great story about how God taught them, and have a huge passion for families… so much so that they launched Intentional Parents. They’ve been pouring into this for a long time, so we sat down and asked them about the big lessons God has taught them.

Homework this week is easy. We’re not giving you an exercise to do – we want to leave space in your head for the conference next week! Here it is: just spend some time together - go on a date, and hang out together. We know it’s hard to make time for this, but if this course is going to be a success for you, you need to draw close together to step into it… so start this week by doing something fun together.

Week 3 - March 5th

This week the Intentional Families conference is happening. If you can make it out, this will be a fantastic opportunity to get some good input. We’re not sending much this week, as the conference should give you lots to think about!

Week 4 - March 13th

This week we are looking at God’s vision for parenting and for marriage. Now, I know not everybody has kids…but I’d encourage you to still take a look at this side of the course. When you have kids, you’ll be pretty busy! So, now could be a good time to invest in thinking about it. And if you are more interested in some input on parenting, your marriage is the engine out of which you’ll do this, so I’d encourage you to try and look at both aspects too.

As we get stuck into learning about these big topics, there’s quite a lot to cover this week – we hope you are up for the challenge! We have a couple of fairly long podcasts (like an online class): one on marriage, and one on parenting. You don’t need to listen to them in one sitting, but you should listen to them before you do the homework. The homework is something to do together – so once again…homework for the course begins with scheduling some time for a date night where you can do something fun as well as the exercises.

If any questions come up, please send them in to us - we look forward to unpacking these when we get together next!

Week 5 – March 20th

This week we are continuing to look at God’s vision for parenting and for marriage. We are discussing values and culture, and how the culture of our family is a reflection of our values (both good and bad).
