How We Scatter
We follow Jesus every day of the week, which means that gathering together on Sundays is just a small part of what it means to be the church in our city.
Our aim is to live out the teachings of Jesus in neighborhoods and workplaces across the west side of Portland, and we do this throughout the week in what we call Westside Communities. We also work for justice both globally and locally through Hear the Cry—an initiative funded by ten percent of all giving that comes into the church. Another ten percent goes directly to planting new churches from scratch, helping established churches grow, and furthering evangelism.
In Westside Communities, we are actively on the mission of God, as the family of God, making disciples of Jesus. Living in this kind of community may be countercultural but it’s nothing new. As we apply the teachings of Jesus, we find ourselves in close communities that reflect the Kingdom of God. Around the world, people and churches call this form of community “missional community.” Joining the movement can be quite simple. Consider where you already have elements of family, discipleship, and mission in your life. What would it look like to weave these elements into a regular rhythm alongside other Jesus followers? Within these families we live as brothers and sisters, eating, praying, and sharing life together. This is also where we live as “missionaries,” joining in Jesus’ kingdom work in our neighborhoods, workplaces, and city. And finally, Westside communities are where we grow in our discipleship to Jesus himself through collective scripture study, prayer and conversation.
